For a moment, regard your universe;
the stars come out every night
without ever making a decision about it
the flowers and trees continue to grow.
Your heart beats without provocation
and you breathe without noticing.
The most intricate and inspiring events in your life happen without effort.
Consider how you came into the world.
You were born into this world regardless of wanting it.
You don't heal your own wounds.
You did nothing and were granted a body with natural intelligence.
Don't be confused; effort isn't the enemy.
Taoism is often misunderstood as complacency or even laziness.
Rather, the Tao Te Ching teaches that if we can see the world as it is
we will be in harmony with it. Once we are in harmony with the world
actions flow through you effortlessly.
It doesn't matter if you are an artist or an accountant.
This is the art of living.
I was struck by the softness in the Tao Te Ching
The first chapter basically says “this isn't it”
I've never known a book to be humble.
It dances around the impossible with grace.
Here you will find English translations of the Tao Te Ching from a variety of translators. Each translation has something new to offer. If you are wondering where to start, I recommend the Stephen Mitchell version which you can buy here.
People of the internet,
